Casa Calatéas is a spacious, attractive ecolodge in the lush hills above Cahuita National Park. Their observation platform has a stunning view of the Talamanca mountain range that extends into Panamá. Casa Calatéas is in the village of Carbón Dos, a pristine rural community that cares about conservation. Hike in their 60-hectare rainforest reserve, or visit Don Ramón’s cacao farm. Local ladies prepare delicious meals for guests, and will teach you how to make the sublime blend of coconut milk and seafood known as rondón.

About Cahuita

Hands-down this is one of the best places to see wildlife in all of Costa Rica. Cahuita National Park was established in 1970 to protect a large coral reef off the Caribbean coast. Unfortunately, the reef is struggling for survival. An earthquake in 1992 lifted a large portion of the coral, some of it was exposed to the air and sun at low tide and rapidly perished. READ MORE
