Explore the Bird Diversity of Costa Rica’s South Caribbean Foothills

Discover the incredible bird diversity of the Keköldi Indigenous Territory, located in the lush foothills of Costa Rica’s South Caribbean region, where more than 100 bird species have been recorded during recent bird counts.

Our birdwatching adventure begins in traditional cacao plantations surrounded by tropical vegetation, where we search for colorful toucans, parrots, cotingas, flycatchers, and a variety of resident and migratory birds. Along the way, we will also learn about the cultural importance of cacao and its connection to the local ecosystem.

As we gradually ascend through the foothills, we explore different habitats that offer excellent opportunities to observe additional bird species, including the striking Black-chested Jay. Although we will not reach the highest elevations or the former Keköldi observation tower, our route takes us to a beautiful natural viewpoint overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This elevated location offers scenic panoramic views and favorable conditions for observing birds moving through the surrounding forest and landscape.

Depending on seasonal conditions and bird activity, we may also explore nearby coastal habitats in search of shorebirds and other species.
